My Valentine’s Playlist

I love music.

So I married a deejay. Most people know hubby as a DR. but, I assure you, he was D.J. long before the R showed up. Hey, my name starts with R. But it’s not all about me.

So, as I was saying…
Back in the day, Sun ran a three hour show called, “Music with Meaning” every Sunday morning down at the University of Miami radio station.  When I first heard the music on his car stereo, I knew right away, this guy is INTO music!

When we had our not so big BIG “I like you and you like me” conversation at the end of that first summer, he left me in the Windy city to return to palm trees and sand. At least that’s how Coral Gables looks on the brochures.

Long distance relationships are hard. I can’t say that I loved being hundreds of miles away from my Sunshine. But we made it work. By one simple word: communication. I, being the writer, wrote letters. Sometimes two or three. Every day. Yeah. You could say I had it bad.

Hubby, on the other hand, was not as fond of pen and paper. He preferred using his own love language. The language of music. So, every Sunday, he’d tape his radio show and mail me the cassettes. I loved them! Not only did I get an earful of the latest and greatest contemporary Christian songs, his voice popped up every so often with an announcement, the weather, and the names of the last three artists that aired.

“This is Deejay Sunny P on the M.I.C. bringing you today’s weather. It’s another beautiful day in Miami, with clear blue skies and sunny, with a chance of more…sun this afternoon. 80 Degrees…”

And then, one day, the tape I had been waiting for arrived. The dedication. He dedicated a song to me! Over the air! For the whole world to hear!! Okay, maybe only a ten mile radius around the UM campus heard. And probably only those that were awake at seven in the morning. So, that leaves about six. Six dedicated listeners who called in every week to win the C.D. of the hour.

Anyway, it didn’t matter if it was six or sixty thousand to this love struck teacher up north in Chi-town. I was touched. The funny thing about that first dedication is how the song ran about five seconds long. The last five seconds of the song. Sun accidentally forgot to cue it back to the start. He had been listening to it shortly before to make sure it was the “best” choice for the infant stage of our love story. He even intro’d the song with a few sweet words to me. Then as soon as the song floated off into silence, he came back on and said,

“Let’s try that again. This song is dedicated to Rajdeep… From the beginning this time.”

And just like so much of our relationship, we’ve had take two’s and take three’s, because nobody’s perfect. And timing is important, but it’s not that everything. Except maybe when it’s a timely apology. A timely hug. And a timely do-over.

I thought I’d share several songs that have peppered our Masala-Marinated Marriage with all you beautiful readers. The first is the song from our dating days.  So sit back, relax, and enjoy yourselves a love song or two.

This is Deejay Rajy-Raj with a flashback, five-song dedication to my Sunshine working over at the hospital. The first is your first dedication over the air to me. The whole song 😉

And this was the song you sang to me on our wedding day…Remember how your foot teetered on the edge of the stage as you sang…Thank God you didn’t fall off in the middle of the chorus.

And this next one was our first dance at our wedding reception. Remember how you twirled me…And then I twirled you! I think that got all our friends laughing!

And this next one is the song that reminds us that Marriage is hard work. And how much I love to dance with you… even if we’re ‘Dancing in the Minefields.”

And finally, if God would have us make it to our twenty-fifth anniversary, this is the song I want to dance with you at the big party! Or in our living room. It makes no difference. Just want to know, “Can I have this dance?”

Oh Boy! We are seriously gonna have to take some dance lessons before the big day! If we plan to pull off that routine!

Look forward to many more love songs to trail our dance through this lifetime. For as many days as God gives us, I’ll never tire of asking, “Hey D.J. Sunny P. Play me another love song? Will ya?!?”

  3. Yeah. I had a feeling the “cassete tapes” would “date” us! But really, we’re not that old! Must work on those dance moves before we get to year 25! I heard there are ballroom lessons in the city for free some nights…will have to investigate! Wanna babysit 😉 !?!

  4. Cassette Tapes! Man, that was a while ago. 😉 I didn’t know that DR sent you songs on cassette tapes when you were dating long distance. That’s amazingly sweet and memorable. Thanks for listing memorable songs from your relationship together especially #5. I still remember watching the HSM3 in your living room and you stood up and urged DR to stand up as well so you can show us some of your dance moves. You looked dreamy and DR just looked plain embarrassed. I can’t wait for your 25th anniversary so this song can be played. 😀
